Start small with AI. Keep what works.
Not sure where to start with AI? You don't need to understand AI or have a big project in mind. 2Gen helps small and medium businesses across Australia and New Zealand find practical ways to use AI, get their people started safely and build on what works.
Start with a few everyday tasks. When you're ready, we can help connect your systems, automate repetitive work and build software where it makes sense.

What could AI do for your business?
Most businesses start with ordinary jobs that eat up time every week. A few common ones:
Summarise long threads and pull out the actions, so the important parts are easier to spot.
Turn your notes and past proposals into a first draft for your team to check and finish.
Spend less time pulling together the same weekly and monthly reports.
Cut down how often the same details are typed into two or three systems.
Help staff find answers in approved company documents such as policies, procedures and price lists.
These are starting points. Part of our job is working out which ones are worth doing in your business.
AI Getting Started
A practical starting point for businesses that aren't sure where to begin. We spend time understanding how your business runs, then help you take a first step with AI that fits. It covers the first two of the five steps below.
- A review of where AI could help your business.
- Two or three practical AI opportunities, picked for your business.
- Suitable AI tools recommended and set up securely.
- A small group of your staff introduced to using AI in their own work.
- Simple guidance for staff on using AI safely and checking its answers.
- A review of what worked and our recommended next steps.
You'll come away knowing where AI fits in your business and what, if anything, to do next.
Let's find where AI can help your business.
Tell us a little about how your business runs. We'll suggest a practical first step.
Five steps, at your pace
You don't need to do all five. Each step should be useful on its own, so you can stop wherever your needs are met.
- Start with your business
Step 1: Find where AI can help
We start by understanding how your business runs today: who does what, where the time goes and which jobs get repeated every week.
From there we pick two or three practical opportunities where AI is likely to help. Sometimes a simpler fix or a tool you already own will do the job. If so, we'll tell you.
- Get comfortable
Step 2: Get your people using AI
We help you choose a suitable business AI tool, set it up securely and get a small group of staff using it in their everyday work. That could be Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT or Claude, depending on what you already use and what the work needs.
We use Claude a lot ourselves. It handles long documents well and lets staff save reusable instructions, called skills, for jobs they do often. We'll still recommend whatever fits your business best.
- Take the next step
Step 3: Connect systems and automate work
Once your team is comfortable with AI, we help it take on repetitive work. This might mean preparing reports, finding information or moving data between systems.
Jobs that repeat can be saved as skills: reusable instructions the AI works from each time. Some can run on a schedule, such as a weekly report that's drafted before Monday starts. Your team still checks the results where it matters.
When AI needs to reach your business systems, such as Microsoft 365 or your job system, we connect them securely. Often that's through a secured gateway we build (known as an MCP gateway), which controls which actions are available and to whom.
- Share what works
Step 4: Make it work across your business
When something works for a few people, the next question is how to make it available to everyone who needs it. That might be a shared app, a managed automation or a connection into a system you already use.
Where 2Gen hosts it, we look after access, monitoring and support. We also add an approval step wherever a person should check the result before it goes anywhere.
- Build what's missing
Step 5: Build custom software when needed
Sometimes nothing off the shelf does what you need. It might be a customer portal, a link between two systems that don't talk to each other or a replacement for an ageing in-house system.
Our software factory can design, build, host and support it. AI-assisted development helps make custom software more affordable for a business your size. By this point the earlier steps have usually shown what is worth building.
How we keep it secure
Security is part of how we set up every AI tool and solution. What's possible depends on the platform and where it runs, so we're clear about which is which.
AI services from other companies
Tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude. We set them up on business plans, link them to your work accounts and choose settings that suit your business where the platform allows.
Each provider has its own rules on where data is stored and how it is used. We'll explain those before you commit.
Solutions 2Gen hosts or manages
Gateways, shared apps and automations we build or run for you. Here we design the controls ourselves.
We agree with you who can use what and which actions are allowed. We set up logging and monitoring. Where a person should approve something before it happens, we build that step in.
We look after AI the same careful way we've looked after business IT since 2007.

Common questions
We know very little about AI. Where do we start?
With a conversation about how your business runs. You don't need technical knowledge or an AI strategy. Our AI Getting Started service is designed for exactly this point.
Do we have to do all five steps?
No. Each step should be useful on its own. You can stop wherever your needs are met. You only move on when the next step makes sense.
Which AI tool should we use?
It depends on what you already use and what the work needs. If you already have Microsoft 365 Copilot or ChatGPT, we can build on that. We use Claude a lot ourselves, especially for document-heavy work and reusable skills. We'll recommend what fits your business.
Is our data safe?
It depends on the tool and how it's set up, which is why setup matters. For AI services from other companies, we use business plans and choose settings that suit your business. We'll explain where your data goes. For anything 2Gen hosts or manages, we design the access controls, logging and approval steps with you.
What does AI Getting Started involve?
We learn how your business runs, find two or three opportunities worth pursuing, set up suitable AI tools securely and help a small group of staff start using them. We give your staff simple guidance on using AI safely and checking its answers. Then we review what worked and suggest sensible next steps.
What is an MCP gateway?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard way AI tools connect to other systems. A gateway sits between the AI tool and your systems. Ours controls which actions are available and to whom. Read more about our secured MCP gateways.
Who looks after it once it's running?
We do. 2Gen has supported business IT since 2007. We monitor and support what we set up, from AI accounts to the apps we host.
